Nydia Track

Bluemoon Shuttle runs a pick up service everyday, leaving Duncan bay @3:30pm.
Please note: 24hrs notice is appreciated.

A lovely 2 day trek, with accomodation options at Nydia bay (ECO LODGE to DOC campsites, & huts).

A linkage of two old bridle path has created this 27km trail, which crosses Kaiuma & Nydia saddle, giving unique views either side of Nydia bay & out to the wider sounds. The  surrounding varies from untouched forest, to regenerating native bush, boasting Rimu, Nikau, & Beech trees, all surrounded by the abundant ferns & flora of New Zealand bush.

Good footwear required as there are some rocky areas & streams to be crossed.
Care should be take if crossing after rain as the stream levels can rise.

Bird watchers will enjoy Nydia, with wood pigeons, Tui & bell birds to be seen. Fantails & robins commonly flit about monitoring your progress. Along the waters edge of the bay, herons stalk their prey, while out deeper, the shags & gannets feast. There's even a resident eel in one of the streams, keen to share your lunch, or just watch you pass...

Bikes are welcome on the track, usually best from the north to south. The track is considered technical, but highly recommended. Bikes can start from Duncan Bay, or from the Opouri Saddle to give an extended downhill run to Duncan Bay.

The Nydia Track is a two-day walk, based on approx 4.5 hours each day.
